Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Services
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
TMS is an effective, non-invasive treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with anxiety and mood regulation. This innovative neuromodulation treatment has shown significant success in treating depression as well as certain anxiety disorders, particularly for patients who have not responded well to traditional treatment with medications alone.
During a TMS session, you are seated in a comfortable specialized reclining chair, located in a dedicated treatment room in our office. We have partnered with Neurostar to provide this service, a deeply established provider of TMS technology. Once the unique measurements are taken to determine the precise target location on your scalp, a magnetic coil is placed next to the scalp. Once turned on, the coil delivers electromagnetic pulses to stimulate the brain circuits known to be associated with anxiety, mood regulation, and other psychiatric symptoms.
There is always a clinician present in the room during the treatment. Each treatment session lasts around 10-30 minutes. Sometimes multiple treatment sessions are delivered in a single day.
How does TMS work?
Key Benefits
Non-invasive: No surgery or anesthesia required
Outpatient procedure: Treatments are conducted in our comfortable office setting
Minimal side effects: Most patients experience only mild scalp discomfort during treatment
Proven effectiveness: Backed by extensive clinical research
Maintains daily routine: Patients can drive themselves to and from appointments. Some treatments can be completed in as little as 10 minutes.
Why MindWork Group
Many people do not get better with TMS therapy alone. At MindWork Group we offer TMS in conjunction with expert psychiatric consultation and, if desired, as part of a comprehensive treatment program. We are one of the few centers in the country offering advanced TMS in the context of an intensive treatment experience.
We offer TMS as a stand alone service, combined with outpatient psychotherapy, or in the context of a comprehensive treatment program including our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). All of these options and approaches will be discussed at length when you participate in the initial consultation.
TMS OPTIONS
At MindWork Group, we approach TMS therapy just like we do all other treatments. We assess your unique needs - your history, current symptoms, experience with other treatments, and life commitments outside of treatment. We offer multiple TMS protocols. This means that there are several ways to approach administering TMS. Some examples may include:
Full course of standard TMS - a full daily session would include about an hour of your time in the office for each treatment, with a complete course taking about 4-6 weeks.
Full course of Theta Burst TMS - an accelerated treatment protocol that involves 3 brief treatments in one day, for a period of 15 days. This would necessitate about 2-3 hours of your time daily in the office.
Maintenance TMS - this protocol may be appropriate for patients who have gotten an initial daily course of TMS already and are looking to establish stability and/or slow taper of treatments. This may occur once or twice a week.
A referral for TMS begins with a meeting with Zac Cordner, M.D., PhD our expert in pharmacological interventions and neuromodulation. A comprehensive consultation is essential in order to determine if TMS is the appropriate next step in your care. Dr. Cordner will gather all of the necessary information about your history and you will discuss together all of the treatment options, including TMS. Please reach out to us to get started. This meeting always precedes any recommendations for or start of TMS treatment and is included in the cost of the acute course of TMS.
WHAT IS THE COST
Standard TMS - cost is determined per daily treatment and the option of combining this with a psychotherapy session
Theta Burst TMS - initial cost includes a Level 2 Consultation and a 15 day treatment course
Please see our Rate Sheet for most up to date pricing.
MindWork Group is a private pay outpatient practice. We do not participate directly with third party payors. We will provide an itemized superbill that patients may submit to their insurance for reimbursement. Please note that while standard TMS is widely covered by insurance, accelerated Theta Burst is not and is, at this time, offered in very few select treatment centers around the country.
